*An "ahnentafel," or ancestor table, is a genealogical chart that can show a lot of information in a condensed form.  The chart starts with the person whose ancestors are being shown--Number 1.  After that, males are always even, females are odd numbers.  Doubling a person's number (2n) will give you their father, (2n + 1) will give you their mother.  The limits of this type of chart can be seen as you go down it -- the numbers can get very large very fast!
